Dr Drill wins Cranbourne Cup

The partnership of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace have won their first $400,000 Cranbourne Cup with the favourite Dr Drill winning impressively with Craig Williams in the saddle.

Despite getting a check through the early stages, he was able to settle down in a lovely spot throughout the run and was given every chance possible by Williams.

“It was a perfect ride by Craig and we have to give full credit to the entire team for this result,” Maher said post-race.

“He’s one of those horses that’s going through his grade, he’s genuine and he’s loving his racing.”

Having won last start at Rosehill over 1900m and already having 9 runs this preparation, Maher and Eustace were confident that his fitness would be a key attribute to his winning chances and Williams also identified this, making his move before the home corner.

“He’s very fit, we don’t have to do a lot with him and when he gets in with these sorts of weights he’s always going to be competitive,” he said.

The five-year-old gelding, who has now won more the $700,000 in prize money, will more than likely head towards the Ballarat Cup next.
